Family Self Sufficiency Program
(FSS)
About FSS
According to HUD, FSS is a program that enables HUD-assisted families to increase their earned income and reduce their dependency on welfare assistance and rental subsidies. The Family Self-Sufficiency Program (FSS) is a voluntary program for participants who receive either Public Housing or Section 8 rental assistance. The goal of the FSS program is to assist families in overcoming barriers which prevent them from obtaining financial independence.
What can FSS do for you?
FSS will help families become self sufficient. FSS will work with each family to create an individual action plan that will identify problems and determine possible solutions. FSS links families with agencies within the community to assist with participants' success.
The Family Self Sufficiency Journey
Applicants will be notified and invited to an orientation as soon as their name reaches the top of the waiting list.
Applicants begin participation.
Participants must be willing to maintain employment and achieve economic independence when they enter the program.
Staff will work one-on-one with each participant to set a five-year plan that includes their current situation, where they want to be, and what steps are needed to get them where they want to be. Each participant's contract package will be tailored to meet their specific needs, current goals (short-term), and future goals (long-term).
Participants will be referred to needed services within the community to assist in achieving short-term and long-term goals.
For FSS participants, special 1st time homebuyer programs are available.
An escrow account (savings account) is established in each participant's name by the Housing Authority. Monthly deposits are made when you report an increase in EARNED income. The account is accessible to the participant when they complete the program or during the program to aid the participants in completing their goals.
